Following the success of the hugely popular Alice's Adventures Underground, we had a mooch about next door in The Wonderland Bar; a theatrical summer pop up that serves curious cocktails in an underground vault by Waterloo station.
The bar is adorned with playing cards and luminous pink flamingos on the walls, amidst a range of aerial acrobats, live music and immersive theatrical performances.
With cocktails from the guys at Bourne & Hollingsworth, we knew we wouldn't be disappointed. The drinks menu, of course influenced by Alice's adventures down the rabbit hole, has a secret ‘Drink Me' cocktail on offer – although it does not boast size-transformational qualities, the vibrant blue concoction is sure to make you want to jump down the rabbit hole and get lost in your own wonderland! The Mead Feast is another tempting delight served in a jar. Made with mead, fresh lemon juice and quince jelly and mixed with honey and basil to really get your taste buds tingling.
Open until August, the bar also features a hedge maze and flamingo croquet, which I have to admit sounds much more exciting than it actually was. The hedge maze leads to a separate bar, which only wristband holders are allowed into, leaving unsuspecting maze-goers to wander back through the simple maze rather meekly.
The saving grace however, is the addition of Pieminster, who are happily serving up a range of delicious pies, from chicken & ham with leek & thyme to a wild mushroom, asparagus, white wine & cream pie – simply divine, even in the heat stricken vault that is the Wonderland bar.
