Comensal Restaurant, Clapham - New Opening
Rose Mccullough |
Abbeville Road in Clapham has gained the reputation as being one of the best foodie streets south of the river. With Kerbisher & Malt, Bistro Union and The Ginger Pig as neighbours, the brand new Comensal is in very good company.
Serving fresh and authentic Mexican food, including small Mexican street food dishes such as Nopalitos Taco (cactus tacos) and Elote de la Esquina (grilled corn on the cob) and larger mains and sharing platters, with a vibrant cocktail list to boot, it's filling a gap in Claphamites bellies. This is not the place to go if you want a cheddar-soaked Chile con Carne or sizzling Fajitas, each and every dish has been inspired by the owner Jon's time living in Mexico City.
He said when we visited, that one disgruntled guest had to be told that “you won't find fajitas here, just like you won't find them in Mexico”. Hear hear.
We recommend the Carnitas Taco (pork braised in a delicious mix of herbs and spices, served with coriander, finely chopped onion and spicy salsa, in a soft corn tortilla) and the Taco Tulum (soft corn tortilla filled with crispy Mexican-style battered cod, house-made crunchy coleslaw, chilli and coriander mayonnaise and a spicy lime salsa), washed down with a refreshing margarita - or for the more adventurous out there, a Comensal, which comes with a fresh red chilli kick.
Jon and his Mexican partner Cati run the show and we have to mention how incredibly well looked after we were. The service was impeccable and we're looking forward to returning in the near future.
